Draft 6 The moment I read my textbook about the conflict of Sri Lanka, it would always reminds me of what this Tamil girl called Durga had gone through when she was small. It happened on an island in the southern tip of India called Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankans were made up of three major races and they were the Sinhalese, Tamils and Moors. At that time, races were not evenly distributed around the island. Durga who was a typical Tamil girl came over to Sri Lanka with her family to look for jobs. After Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, Sri Lankan government only granted citizenship to those who were born here or whose forefathers were born here. Hence, many Indian Tamils found themselves stateless. “How could I support my family when I am jobless right now?” Durga mumbled to herself with tears rolling down her cheek. Her friend, Rahul, overheard and offered her to work at the tea plantations in Sri Lanka .Without much consideration she agreed and this gave her the opportunity to interact with others and gain more experiences for her future. Durga managed to speak English after working for a few months. When Sri Lanka was under the British rule, English educated Tamils like Durga could enter the government services got promoted and occupied some of the most important jobs in the government easily. But with independence, the Sinhalese government decided to improve the position of Sinhalese and made Sinhala the only language of administration in 1965, under the Official Language Act. Durga and her colleagues were given three years to learn the language or they would be dismissed. This unfair treatment affected Durga as she found it difficult to secure her job. The thought of getting promoted after striving for so many months vanished within a few seconds. She found it unfair and when to look for Rahul. She said in a furious tone, “Why must the government treat us so differently from the Sinhalese?" "I’ve got no idea about it at all. Maybe the government was just too biased to the Sinhalese,” stammered Rahul. "Before 1970, university admission is based on merit and examinations are in English. This benefits English educated Tamils and they scored well in examinations. This results in the number of Tamil and Sinhalese students are almost proportionate in the medical and engineering courses," Rahul added on. "If I was to born earlier, maybe life for my family and I would not be like that. Now, Tamils like us have to work harder and score higher than the Sinhalese in order to secure a place in the University. It is important because it would later, enable us to secure better jobs," Durga replied with a sigh. When the idea of asking a separate state was rejected, dissatisfied Tamil youths formed a militant group called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) and resorted to violence. Durga being a girl was also forced to join the army to fight against the Sinhalese. Tension between the Tamils and Sinhalese continued to increase, leading to more fights and deaths. There was nothing Durga could do to stop this. All she wished for was just that the war could end in the near future as there were countless deaths and families were being separated. However, gaining back confidence of the Tamils was not easy. The government had to ensure that there were equal rights for the Tamils in the country. They were able to speak their own language and equal work opportunities between them and the Sinhalese. Not long after Durga and her family left for India, the leader of the Tamil Tiger was arrested. Will Sri Lanka be like how peaceful it used to be in the future or will there still be conflict between the Tamils and Sinhalese? No one can predict what will happen in the future. The Sinhalese and Tamil conflict which began with peaceful demands by the Tamils escalated to violent conflict that involves other countries. There were political consequences which is the violence and armed conflict, the economic consequences which caused a massive unemployment, loss of foreign investment and tourism earnings and also social consequences like the Sri Lankan Tamils being driven out of their homeland. Attempts have continued for the past few years to resolve the conflict, but these have proved to be unsuccessful. There was nothing Durga could do to stop this but he had no choice but to continue doing this despite any other things because all she wants was just to be able to be with her family forever and never be separated. Saturday, March 28, 2009 My hobbies are swimming and playing volleyball. In addition,my likes are playing volleyball with friends, shopping and talking on phone. As for dislikes, i don't have any.My daily home life is pretty simple.Everyday when i come back from school,i will have a bath first then follow by my lunch. After that,i will start doing my homework and have a short nap is there is still time.My school life are extremely exciting and full with unexpected things waiting for us everyday. In school, there were be lots of friends and there would always be laughters and funs among ourselves.I have never think of what i want to be until this project. It took me a long time to think and search for the job that i want to work as.This is because my hobbies and likes will not get me a high pay job if i base on it and choose a job. After much consideration,i think of being an accountant. An incident that had occurred before in my life make me want to be an accountant. There was once where my mum had attended a course that her office had sent her. After her course, she was supposed to have a exam to test them on the things they had been taught. She asked for help and i was surprised that i managed to answer some questions. After that incident,i found that accountant was just the cup of tea for me. ![]() An accountant is someone whose job is to keep or check financial records. There are quite a number of accountants in Singapore. For example, senior accountants, financial accountants, adminstrative and accounting accountants, management accountants, asserts control accountants, regional accountants and cost accountants. As for me, i want to be an assistant corporate accountant. The minimum salary is $1,500 and the maximum salary is $1,800 per month. It requires at least an educational qualification of a polytechnic or diploma,an experience of 2 to 5 years and skills for inter-personal, finance-accounting and microsoft office. In addition,it also needs a mid level career of 2 plus years of experiences. Here is a brief job description of an assistant accountant: - Dealing with full set of accounts. - Managing monthly closing and reconcilation. - Accountable for processing and timely submission of monthly financial reports, balance schedules and quarterly GST returns. - Assist in preparation of management reports and annual budget. - Assist in audit and tax matters and liaise with auditors and tax agents. - Perform other ad-hoc assignments directed by superior and administrative work, where applicable. I found out that accountants are quite common needed in Singapore. This could be probably because they are needed to help deal with those accounts in big companies. Personally,i felt that accountants are important in every company because it help the company does a lot of things like managing accounts and then send it to their managers so that they could have a better view of how their company had progress these years. If not good they will gather together and have a meeting so that the situation could be improve.Accountants can be counted as common jobs in our current lifes. Therefore,in my opinion,i think that accountants contributed quite a lot to no matter the company or the society. 10:54 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2009 The day had finally arrived and that means I am going to be one year older already. My thought on Chinese New Year is the day whereby children and those who are not married can receive red packets from their parents and relatives. Chinese New Year is often called the Lunar New Year, especially by people in mainland China and Taiwan. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as 'chuxi'. It literally means "Year-pass Eve". On the first day of my lunar new year ,my family and i went to both sides of my grandma house. I ate quite a lot on that day.We had two kinds of eating methods ; steamboat and barbequed. After that,we rest for awhile and started gambling.I slept quite late that day.I didn't really go count how much i received at the end of the day.The interesting event that happened today was that i ate for nearly 2 hours non-stop. On the following day,all of us headed over to my grandma house again. This time round we had lunch first before heading over to my the other relative house.By the time we reached there, only a few of them were there. As the time flew passed, more and more people started to come.We all started gambling again after dinner. The interesting event for today is that most of us were like so high and kept on laughing while playing black jack. This had caused one of my relatives to fell off the sofa because she laughed until she lost balance. On the last day,we all headed down to bedok after having lunch at my house. We all headed over to two houses. We were gambling once again but this time only bet a few dollars only.I actually did managed to win.The special event that occurred today was that my cousin happened to come back from army and we all were like over there teasing him.My parents was like saying how much a boy could have change himself after going for NS. After these few days of visiting of relatives' houses with my family memebers, i realised that kinship is very important. To me, kinship is like nothing in this world is able to compare with because it is irreplacable. When we had any problems,it is always our family members who are the first to step out and give us a helping hand. 9:41PM |
